Dr. Berglund’s laboratory is interested in the development of mesenchymal stem cell therapies to treat inflammatory diseases. Mesenchymal stem cells secrete anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors that inhibit immune responses and promote tissue repair. These cells can be isolated from the bone marrow of human or veterinary patients, cultured in the laboratory, and then injected into the patient to treat their condition. The Berglund lab is focused on manipulating mesenchymal stem cells using the protein transforming growth factor-b to enhance the immunomodulatory and regenerative properties of the stem cells and creating a safe and effective off-the-shelf mesenchymal stem cell therapy.
