Celebrating the Remarkable Career of Dr. Nathaniel Tablante as He Retires

The University of Maryland's Veterinary Medicine department announces with mixed emotions the retirement of Dr. Nathaniel Tablante, who has served as a distinguished member of the faculty for over 27 years. His outstanding contributions to veterinary medicine, particularly in the field of poultry health, have left an indelible mark on the university and the wider scientific community. 

Dr. Tablante's expertise in poultry medicine, epidemiology, and poultry health management has been a cornerstone of his illustrious career. His research has significantly advanced our understanding of economically important poultry diseases, especially on the Delmarva Peninsula. Notably, he has worked tirelessly to investigate knowledge gaps and risk factors in the pathogenesis and recurrence of these diseases, developing and recommending practical and cost-effective strategies to prevent and control outbreaks such as Avian Influenza.

Beyond his research, Dr. Tablante has been deeply committed to the development of computer-based flock health profiles and poultry disease monitoring programs. His epidemiologic studies have been pivotal in identifying predisposing factors associated with poultry diseases, providing critical insights that have shaped industry practices. Additionally, his extension service and technical support to commercial and small-scale/backyard-type poultry producers have been invaluable, enhancing the health and sustainability of poultry operations.

As the Director of the Veterinary Medical Sciences Graduate Program, Dr. Tablante has fostered a collaborative environment, working closely with colleagues on groundbreaking poultry disease research. He has also shared his vast knowledge through teaching Anatomy of Domestic Animals at the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences, inspiring countless students with his passion for the field.

Dr. Tablante's dedication to education extends to his extension activities, where he has developed educational programs focused on poultry biosecurity and disease prevention. His commitment to improving poultry health and safety has earned him recognition and respect from peers and industry professionals alike.

Dr. Tablante's legacy of excellence in poultry health and education will undoubtedly continue to inspire and influence future generations of veterinarians and researchers.
