QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree in Veterinary Medicine as well as a Ph.D. degree in a related field, be internationally recognized for accomplishments in research, have demonstrated a commitment to teaching or extension, and be qualified to be tenured as Professor.
  • Candidates should possess outstanding oral and written communication skills, and have a demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and industry and/or other clientele.
  • The candidate must demonstrate progressive leadership and previous experience and commitment to professional education, essential to providing oversight of Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine and graduate programs at the University of Maryland.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for the Department’s day to day operations and reports to the Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
  • Provide vision and leadership to all Department personnel and programs.
  • Effectively administer the finances, policies, and facilities of the Department.
  • Work productively and effectively with department faculty, staff, students, and the Dean and other University personnel.
  • Provide proactive liaison with leaders of industry, government, other academic institutions, the public and professional societies.
  • Facilitate Departmental excellence by the recruitment and retention of outstanding faculty, staff, and students, and foster the professional and scholarly growth of these individuals.
  • Contribute directly to scholarly activities of the Department.Serve on the Executive Board of the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (VMCVM).
  • Work with VMCVM Dean to develop and manage annual budgets.
  • Delivering educational programs as part of the VMCVM.
 DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:The Department’s mission is to protect and improve the health of animals and the people of Maryland, the United States, and the global community through the provision of exemplary education programs to undergraduate, graduate and professional students; conducting "cutting edge" research programs in animal and public health; and providing outstanding Extension and Continuing Education programs to improve the quality of life in Maryland, nationally, and globally. During the next five years, the Department has set as a vision to become more internationally recognized for providing excellent educational programs, conducting innovative research in infectious diseases and biomedical sciences, and serving as a catalyst for the dissemination of new knowledge and biotechnology. The Department of Veterinary Medicine and the Maryland Campus of the VMCVM are one and the same unit housed in the Avrum Gudelsky Veterinary Center, University of Maryland College Park Campus. The Department was established in 1897 and served as an instructional facility until the addition of the research program in 1917. In 1990, the Maryland Campus of the VA-MD Regional College was dedicated. Throughout its existence, the Department has performed ground-breaking research in animal health and has become internationally renowned for research in animal diseases. The Department of Veterinary Medicine is home to the Veterinary Medical Sciences (VMSC) Graduate Program. The program offers both Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. Members of the VMSC Graduate Program faculty specialize in a wide range of research interests in infectious diseases and zoonoses, including microbiology, immunology, virology, cell and molecular biology, and poultry health management and disease prevention.
In the last five years, great strides have been made in the Department's contribution to animal and human health. The Department focuses on research, teaching and extension/outreach, with a particular emphasis on investigation of disease pathogenesis, host immune responses, and vaccine development for infectious diseases. The Department now ranks in the top tier of animal and human health research centers in the nation, consistently producing new discoveries in the areas of virology, immunology, epidemiology, bacteriology and public health by outstanding scientists and teachers utilizing state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. Our graduates are highly placed at prestigious institutions throughout the United States and elsewhere. This Department is committed to the success and well-being of its faculty, students, and staff.
